ABOUT THE AUTHOR
It was 1963, and I was sprawled on the couch, engrossed in the Giants-Dodgers game. My father, a lean man with a deep olive complexion, black hair, and a sharp, hawk-like nose, settled beside me. Occasionally, he’d deliver a brief lecture about life, and this was one of those moments. I wasn’t particularly interested; Sandy Koufax was pitching, and Willie Mays was at the plate. Nevertheless, I knew I had to at least feign attention.

“If you’re fortunate,” he began, “you’ll encounter three things that will shape your life forever. These aren’t just aspects of existence; they’re what will allow you to thrive, not just merely exist.”

At twelve years old, I was often lost in dreams, and he was trying to pull me from my constant fantasy. Even for a kid my age, I tended to be scatterbrained—always looking around, rarely fully engaged. Sometimes I listened; often, I didn’t. But this time, something was different.

Leaning in a little closer, he said, “I want you to hear this clearly. There are three lessons you must come to terms with: love, animosity, and response. If you’re lucky, you’ll find love. And you probably will, because you’re not exactly unattractive.” I shook my head, muttering, “Thanks, Dad.”

“Animosity will find its way into everyone’s life. What matters is how you handle it, both for yourself and for others. Your response will not only shape your own life but also affect those around you. Your reaction will reflect who you are.”

chapters we have

In Trump, Hitler, and Me, the chapters explore how teaching has become complex in today’s world. The book looks closely at what educators go through, showing how important their role is in guiding students during times of political and social change.

chapter 01

The principal stood at the door, six feet four inches and two hundred and fifty pounds. His stomach pushed his blue tie up across his white shirt. He was here to talk to me again. I stood at the front of the room and spoke of intellectual evolution and how it impacted political leadership.

chapter 02

I’m a union guy, and I was raised in a union family. My mother and father were in unions and swore by them. Early on, what I couldn’t possibly understand was that teachers are ambivalent about unions. The school was not a “closed shop,” and signing up was voluntary.

chapter 03

When I walked in after being put on leave on November 10, 2016, no one was home. I made a few calls to the union, but no one answered. The three-day Veterans Day weekend had begun. I thought I would have to put off dealing with it until Wednesday.

chapter 04

The superintendent’s wish that the whole situation evaporate wasn’t about to happen anytime soon. The local newspaper, the Mountain View Voice, in an editorial, referred to a catchphrase of 1960s TV Westerns.
